When putting in new RAM I corrupted a file. It seems to be VMM32.vxd. I am running Win98SE and want to reinstall the OS system. I can get boot Win98SE from safe mode & by selective startup.
But whenever I have tried to reinstall from either within Win98 or from a boot disk in DOS,I get the same message. Win98 setup checks my system & then says I cannot upgrade the operating system.
I am not trying to upgrade it, just reinstall it.
Is there a way to reinstall WIN98 over an installed identical version of the OS?
What I am trying to do is to Reinstall the OS & at the same time keep my settings.
Thanks

Have you tried booting from the CD? In the past I have done an over the top install booting from my Win98 CD and didn't have any problems

Befroe you do anything else > Why do you think vmm32.vxd is corrupted? If you can get into Safe Mode, I doubt that's the case. What errors are you getting?

Are you using a full install disk or an upgrade disk?

Very true,

I'd suggest taking out the new RAM and put the old back in. Can you boot now?

I appreciate the help...I got so frestrated I am doing a reformat & clean reinstall.
My version is the full upgrade. I could start Win98 in safe mode & in selective startup without anything checked.

If you have a Win98 SE Full version you need to install on top of an OS, the setup progam looks for two files to determine if Windows is already there.

Boot with CD-ROM support. Then at DOS Prompt...
C:\>cd windows
C:\WINDOWS>ren win.com win.old
C:\WINDOWS>ren winver.exe winver.old
C:\WINDOWS>d:
D:\>setup

Should roll through with that.

P.S. I see that at the time of my post you had already decided to format the drive. But for anyone else who may read this... Good Luck!
