Is there away of writing in SQL form like you do with the Visual Basic editor in MS Access 2000? I know that you can do this form the query section but is there another way?

I am just looking for some general davice with SQL. I am curently developing a database for a college course. I Know that i need to implemt some SQL and VB code to make to di the things I require. I have just purchased a book (SAMS Teach Yourself SQL SE) and i was wondering if this is the besyt way to lean SQL? It is quite general and accomodates for All DMS.
