I have this problem, my file type association with MS word, Excel and powerpoint is missing. When ever I click a file (eg. test.doc) the Open with dialogue box will appear.

I have tried uninstalling MS office 97 and then reinstalling it plus the service packs 1 and 2 but it still have the same problem.

I have also associated the files manually which works fine, but when I restart my computer the file association with MS office 97 applications will dissapear.

I have also restored the backup registry and now only word is restored but not the others.

thanks in advance for the help.

It seems that no one else has ventured a reply so I'll give it my two cents. Having never used Win95 this is just speculation on my part but in Win98 and win2K TweakUI has an option under Repair and one of the items is Repair Associations. ???

Why don't you just choose the desired application from the 'open with' box, and then check 'Always use this program...'.

This will restore the file associations for files with that particular extension.

I think Extensions section of win.ini may be resetting what you want each time you restart. Check there, use Sysedit and scroll down to appropriate section. You can edit this file and a .bak file will automatically be created for you.

Hope this helps

You need the proper switches and DDE Messages under FolderOptions File Types.

As an example...Microsoft Word:
The open action should look like the following:
Application used to perform action="C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WINWORD.EXE" /n

Use DDE should be checked.

DDE Message=[REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]
Application=WinWord
Topic=System

DDE Application not running is blank.

I think the problem is because Windows 95 does not register the program. When I double click on a unknown file, the open with dialogue box will appear but excel and powerpoint is not in the list. Even after I uninstall MS Office and reinstall it the program still does not get registered. How can I manualy register these programs into the registry.??

NOTES:
Before you delete the Microsoft Office folder, make sure that you do not have other programs, such as Microsoft Project or Microsoft Publisher, installed in the Microsoft Office folder. If you delete the Microsoft Office folder, you may need to reinstall these programs.

Make sure that you remove all personal files, including custom macros, from this folder before you delete it.

Some of the files located in the folders to be removed may contain macros, templates, or other customizations that you may want to save. You should back up these files, so that you can restore them after you reinstall Office. They are:

Normal.dot
Custom.dic
*.xlb
Personal.xls
Blank.pot
*.pst
*.pab
*.acl except Mso97.acl
Any personal templates you created that might be in the Templates folder.

reghakr,
from your reply are u saying that I should uninstall everything and also clear up the registry and then reinstall everything again together with the SP1 and SP2 ??
cause that is what I did and when I restart my computer it does not get registered. Is there a way I can edit the registry and add in/register the programs manually.???
