How can I ensure my Win 98 programs are the latest available?

I have had to reload Windows from my original disk a few times and when I use the sytem information tool I am frequently told I now have an older version of a file than I had previously. But that previous version is often no longer on my machine and thus I cannot restore it

All help appreciated

BTW I regularly go to the Windows Update page and download anything new which is relevant to me

This stands to reason: as you install new software, some of your system files gradually get replaced by more recent versions.
When you install Windows on top of itself it presumably puts the orginal dlls back again, and I don't think that can be helped.

On the other hand, It's not a great problem either.
When you install new software, the process starts all over again. Upgrade your version of Internet Explorer and 60+ dll's will be upgraded to newer versions, to give one example.

In addition to Tony's advice if you need component upgrades check this site out.
