I use Win 98 and suspect my IE 5.50 is not working correctly but I cannot repair it

When I go to Start>Accessories>System Tools>System Info>Tools>IE Repair Tool it starts but then quickly tells me I have to reinstall because my version of loadwc.exe is too old

When I try to download IE 5.50 afresh I am told I already have the latest version and am recommended not to reinstall!!

How do I upgrade my loadwc.exe and should I just disregard the reccomnedation not to reinstall IE 5.50 and just go ahead and do it?

Perhaps the problem was caused by me upgrading to IE 6.0 but then going back to 5.5 as McAfee ActiveShield does not yet support 6.0

Also, IE is not included in the programs listed under the Control Panel Add/Remove programs facility. The only article from MS I can find is `Updated Versions of Internet Explorer Not Listed in Add/Remove Programs' but this is only applicable if one has Windows 2000 and is thus of no use to me

As usual, all help very much appreciated

Jimmy

Hi Jimmy,

You should be able to correct this by restoring the original version of the file from your Windows CD-ROM through System File Checker.
On the other hand, that one might well be too old as well...

Try this: go to your Internet Explorer folder, typically C:\Program Files\IE, open the 'Setup' folder therein, and doubleclick Setup.exe.

You now should get an option to restore the previous Windows configuration. When you do that you'll end up with your previous version of IE, which you could then upgrade again to IE 5.5.

Try Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2

Good luck, Tony

loadwc.exe is required for version 4.0, is not neccessary for 5.0 or higher (to load at startup)

Remove the BrowserWeb Check from msconfig, then rename loadwc.exe to loadwc.ex_. Then run the repair again.

Also go to Start>Run, and type vcmui. If you find backed-up versions that are newer than your present versions, replace them here.

If all else fails, this might help. As you know, IE does not have an :uninstall" option in add/remove programs. But you can delete IE with a free program: IEradicator
