How does one replace the Kernel32.dll file, after downloading a new one. I'm assuming I would need to go into the scary DOS Command Prompt, and hope I don't mess up?? A few months ago I had dl a new one, and was sure it simply replaced at the same time, but guess it can't since the file's in use and needed to run Windows.
I am having problems with many programs causing and invalid page fault in the kernel.:)) I know I don't have a virus. This is really giving me a problem.
Thanks

copy the new Kernel32.dll file into a disk. then go to windows explorer and search for Kernel32.dll and copy down the directory where the file Kernel32.dll exist in all instances. then restart your computer and press F8 to get the boot options screen. select safe mode comand prompt only. or u can just use a boot disk to boot your computer. then copy the Kernel32.dll file to the correct location.

I don't think I understand....I do know how to go to the command prompt, and I know that the Kernel32 file is in Windows/system folder, plus there' only one.
So, I put that file on a disk, and then from DOS command....how exactly do I go about copying the file from the disk to the system folder? The problem is, there will still be the original file in my systems folder, and there can't be two with the same name.
Plus, I haven't really used DOS before.
So then I get back into Windows, and I'll have two of these, but Windows won't let you rename the original and delete it.
I think I need Step by Step instructions...:o))
Thanks for your help

when windows is starting it will display something like "Starting Windows 98.." something like that, during this time press the F8 key, press it a few times until a boot menu appear. Then select safe mode command prompt only.
then the screen will show
c:\>
type copy a:\Kernel32.dll c:\windows\system\Kernel32.dll
if the copy is successful it will echo "1 file(s) copied"
then press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot your computer.

Msinfo32 is a tool? I didn't even know I had it, but just checked. It's dated 1997....What is it for?
I downloaded the Kernel32 file from a link on Windrivers.com. You can just download them seperately. I've understood that file can get damaged, and did replace it awhile back with no problem, and my errors disappeared.
Thank you much, I'll check that out.
BTW If you're on Eastern time, you sure are burning the midnight oil. I'm Pacific..:)

My mistake..you had mentioned MSCONFIG tool..
MSInfo32 is the system information tool used on Windows ME for sure..don't know what other OS it is valid for..
Kernel32.dll errors seem to be caused by a great many things. If you consistently have to replace KERNEL32.DLL, perhaps it would be prudent to find out what is causing the error. At any rate you are in good hands on this forum as the TOP guys are here to support us.

It is almost never necessary to replace Kernel32.dll when you're getting page faults in it.
The dll itself is usually not to blame. Your Kernel32.dll errors could be due to almost anything, such as spyware, viruses, driver problems, software conflicts, you name it.
If you could tell us the exact text of your page faults (click on the 'details' button), and the moment at which they occur, that would be a huge help.
Cheers, Tony
