I have no repair disk and no Windows 2000 disk - tried to take off IE 6.0 which was working correctly for the mostpart and it never properly uninstalled. Running the uninstall did nothing. Then I downloaded the service pack for ie 5.5 and after I installed that I could no longer type in the Internet Explorer type fields like search or login boxes. Tried to reinstall 6.0 and it said the program was already installed but installed it again anyway. Then on restarting the computer an error is generated while trying to set up the IE 6.0 program, a typical "Explore has generated an error and will be closed" type dealy. So rebooting it again works except now my network connections to my other computer are kapooey (don't work). Tried uninstalling again and again, uninstall did not remove the program. So I manually threw out the IE folders that I could find, and after that I am now getting an error every time I open certain programs like Control Panel I get a Microsoft Internet Explorer error : ERROR:29 Unspecified Error -- and behind that is an Internet Explorer Script error. Also once I threw out the IE folder (which probably had an association I needed) now when I go into ADD and REMOVE programs the names of the programs are all missing and all I see is the icon for the program. I downloaded explorer 5.0 but I can't install it because it says a higher version is already installed. So my next idea is to go into the Registry and clean out all the IE folders (but I'm not real sure how registry works and I know I can mess it up real bad if I don't know what I'm donig and I don't) but I'd like to just install IE any version that would WORK and hopefully fix my other programs/files that won't open correctly now like my LAN connection -- someone PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

WOW. Yea IE6 sucks on Win2k for me too, except an old beta version... You have done alot of bad stuff. Your best bet is to reinstall Windows. Try installing it on top of itself first and if that doesnt work then you need to totally format and reinstall. Im sure you can find a Win2k disc, you had it installed before so im sure you own a license of it, just obrrow a friends to reinstall...

Thank you - that is good advice. I actually figured something out, not sure what exactly but everything is now fixed. I downloaded a service pack for Windows 2000 and downloaded an encryption fix for W2k, installed them both, removed certain parts of IE from the registry, then restarted the computer and reinstalled IE 6 - now everything is fixed, all the associations, etc. I'm not sure which part of what I did fixed it but everything is back to normal thankfully.

I actually don't have the boot disk or the W2k disk that came with the computer because I bought the computer used from my work and it's some sort of violation for them to give me the disks. So I'm really glad I didn't have to reinstall Windows.

But thank you very much for your response, this board is great and I'm sure I'll be back here often for help!!!

:D
