when I set user home directory to \\servername\private\%username% in NT4 server the user homedirectory connects to \\servername\private In this directory the user must manually search and open his home directory. Is there a way to fix this? There are quite a lot of users and it is giving people a hard time finding their home dir's.

I tested it on a Desktop NT server and a laptop NT station. I couldn't get it to work either. Although I did have some success. I was able to enter..

\\server\%username%

and the login mapped it correctly. However, as you can see the users folder is in the root drive of the server. I suppose you could devote an entire hard drive for home directories and also image it for backup purposes.

I know it's not the main solution.

try ntfaq.com or jsiinc.com

Install (after study off readings) Microsoft DFS for NT4.
This is Distributed File System, this will enable you to do what is calle "root mapping" in Novell terms.

For the client you will need NT4 (min SP3) win2000 windows ME or Win9x (only the last one needs DFS client software, the rest has it build in)

Works great.
