I have Win 98 SE and have been told by Microsoft that the registry is most likely corrupted. Problems with video card and sound etc. Direct X 8 diagnostic showa no problems. I want to upgrade to XP in hopes of correcting registry problems or do I need to clean install full version to fix problems. I have done a clean install once with win 98 and it was a nightmare.

That's a little difficult to answer depending on what sort of corruption has happened and whether it is a section of the registry that the XP upgrade requires or will rebuild.
Since the upgrade is cheaper, personally I would go that way and if it didn't work then do a basic clean re-install of Windows 98 followed by a Windows XP install. Either way you may have to do a clean re-installation, at least with the Upgrade you have a chance of not having too. You may also be able to do a clean install of Windows XP with the upgrade disks, it may just ask you to insert the Windows 98 CD to confirm your copy (I don't know if that is possible with XP but it has been an option with some MS software in the past).
