it may seem an obvious question: how can I change the default installation path (i.e. C:\\WINDOWS\.....) into D:\\My_FOLDER? I have AMD475, w98 I edition, two HDs, first one for system, second one for all the rest... can anyone help me?
thanx in advance!

Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Setup\\SourcePath.
That's where you find the default installation path.
Good luck, Tony

One quick question.Have you moved the drive from the Primary to the secondary? Why is Windows being put into another folder and
is D now the Primary Partition and Set to Active but on the secondary channel???
Could you please post a few details so you don't get half the story. Great. Thanks.
Sorry. That was more than one question. But your setup sounds odd.

What you describe is not the directory into which Windows is installed. It is the path to the cabs. The source.
I think the question is how to change the path to the actual installed Windows Directory??
I may be mistaken. That's how I'm reading it.

You're right, Mo! Didn't read the question carefully enough.

thnk you all. I must apologize for my bad english... well I might not be clear as far as I would.
My setup : two HD, first 2Gb used mainly for S.O. w98 Iedition, second Hd 6Gb used to store programs and data. Cpu is AMD 475, 192 ram.
now the question: as I'm going to install a new application ( I usually put every appz into D drive), the wizard gives the default folder C:\Programs installation path. I want to change this default and turn it into D:\Programs in order to avoid the manual change every time. I think it is possible but HOW?
the way you sauggested regards the source path, and >I realize that it's my fault in myu previous explanation... can you help me again?
thx a lot

I'm not a Programmer, but I think that's hard wired into the program installation. I don't know of any way to change that.
Maybe someone else will come along with more information.

Thanks for the link. However, that is what I was discussing with the others. That is the Source Path. The place Windows refers to when it installs from Add Remove Programs and needs files or retrieves a driver. It is the place From Which Windows was installed, so to speak.
What katalexis wants is to change the default Install TO Folder. when a program is installed, it is by Default installed to C:\program Files. And that is what is hard wired, I believe. I don't think that can be changed.

To make finding installed applications easier, Microsoft proposed a standard directory hierarchy. Windows creates a \Program Files directory. This directory is the default location where all applications should be installed.
Most users want to leave it alone. but others ( like me ) want to change it to other directories.
anyhow ,You can change the name of this directory by examining the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion key, which contains the value ProgramFilesDir="C:\Program Files".
I've been successfull to change the default path to c:\gh_habib\My Applications by changinging this value.
i've tried it on win98plus and win2000pro and no problem has been occured.

That's very interesting. I think I'll change mine. I install most to D:\ I think you have just answered the original question.
