Hello...
How do I disable the "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" that appears whenever I open a picture file? I have my own viewer that I have always used, that has a lot more features than this thing does.
I know I can launch my viewer if I click the "close and edit" button in the lower right corner.... but I want to get rid of this thing forever!
This is another example of Microsoft intruding on other business. I paid and registered for this shareware viewer, and now I can't use it right away without pressing a button..... this is very annoying.
Thanks.

Well your shareware program should have something to take over file assosiations, if it doenst you wasted your money. But to set the assosiations yourself go to: Tools | Folder Options and go to the view tab. Find the files extensions you want to change (gif, jpg, etc.) and push the 'Change' button then choose your viewer.

Yes, it does.
However, even if the "Open" action is the "default" (the action action required to open a picture and view it in ACDSee) in the file types tab, if you right click on a jpg, there will be another action - Preview - in bold at the top of the list.
This action is neither listed in the file types tab, or the registry under jpgfile or .jpg under HKCR.

I have ACDsee too and your right about the fila assosciations, either XP does something different or that XP pic viewer re-assosciates itself, which is what i am sure is happeneing, i will figure out soon enough...

If you can't get the shareware program or ACDC to be the default graphic viewer. Here's your fix:
right-click .bmp>open with>choose program>check always use this application>either choose the program from the list or browse for it.

I have been having the same problem. However if I use the above method it only CHANGES the application but disables the ADVANCED abilities I could use under Folder Options/File Types(Advanced) DDE Options. Where would I edit it so that I could force it to use the software I want it to yet use the DDE options?
How do I remove this monopolizing m$ crap. You think the DoJ wouldn't of let them do the same damn thing again. This is illegal to have to hack the operating system to use 3rd party software.

See my new post on 12/06/01 on how I did a crude hack to disable the viewer. I started a new thread because I want to see if anyone else has more recent info.
