I am a newbie to networking and I have a simple 3 node network in my home. All machines were running Win 98 and I recently upgraded one to Win 2K. I can see the machine on the network but when I try to connect to it I get \\workshop\IPS$ and asks for a password. I have tried sharing options and I think I have the sharing set up right (set up a new share for each drive with letter c, d etc and permissions set to everyone and read/write access)

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance

I have 2 questions followed by some suggestions.
1) Are you on a 56K dial up for internet or are you on cable/dsl?
2) Are you worried about tight security?

If you are on a dial up internet connection and not worried about security then I suggest enabling the GUEST account. It is disabled by default in Win2K. This will allow ALL on your network to access the machine. Then you can set permissions per folder you dont want others to have access to. If you are on a cable modem or DSL then I suggest getting a firewall BEFORE you enable the guest account. Once you have that then enable the guest account. Let me know if you have questions.

create an same user account in windows 98 and try to access the machine. you'll surely get through this.
