Machine hangs while working with mouse

I have formatted a machine that had windows ME , and installed windows 200 server. Everything works properly until the mouse is used. Even the mouse operates smoothle for first few minutes and then hangs the machine completely.I have to reboot the same. I have tried with both serial and PS/2 mouses and changed ports buth with the same result . Please suggest a remedy.

(1) don't mind what was installed prior to Win2KServer.
(2) do you have minimum hardware requirements (eg memory) to run the Server version of Win2K ?
(3) what gives you the impression that the mouse is responsible for this system hang ?
Does the system just run nicely if you don't move the mouse ?
Can you run certain applications (eg Notepad) just by the keyboard (only using the keyboard shortcuts, Fn-keys and cursor control keys) without that the system hangs ?

My machine had Windows ME prior to Win2k server
Yes my machine has the memory required for installing win 2k
Yes I can run NotePad , MS word etc without using mouse when the system does not hang. As soon as I start moving the mouse, the system hangs within a few minutes.
