I'm running on WIN2000
Recently, my mouse right-click function on files, which is supposed to show the context menu, displays very slowly.
Has anyone come across this?

I have had this same problem, but only on the web (IE), are you having it on the desktop as well?

the right-click thing was driving me out of my mind -- i am the laziest person i know, and the effort to move the mouse all the way up to the pull-down menus and find the function i want is just waaaay too much. so between the programmable wheel-button and the right-clicking i never really use pull-down menus at all.
until i started using W2K, and within three days i wanted to personally strangle every MS employee on the west coast. as anyone who does lots of websurfing knows, it's much easier to right-click and follow links in multiple, separate windows rather than having to scroll through Back and Forward, especially when you're checking out search results. suddenly i had to wait an unacceptable 2.9 secs for each right click. i hate you, bill.
anyway, while fooling around with Xteq's tweak util, i discovered that one of the plug-ins would take care of this problem for me. here's the description:
"When you right-click the mouse in Internet Explorer, the program checks its codepage settings in the Registry. If it finds a blank codepage, then it will try to locate a replacement. Doing this wastes a lot of time and processor cycles, so by removing the empty entries, the process can be speeded up.
This option lets you hide the blank settings, so IE won't try to find replacement codepages. This may greatly improve IE's performance.
On some machines your codepages may be correctly configured, in which case, using this option won't offer any improvements in performance. The plug-in will report back how many codepages were removed when the options is activated."
i haven't been able to figure out exactly what the hell that means, so i've no clue how i would do this manually. so the first thing i do when i sit down to any win2000 machine is install X-teq and execute this feature -- it's worth it!
you can get x-teq x-setup [freeware] at practically any file archive like tucows.com or download.com
hope this helps someone as much as it did me...

You may also find that if you are running any Anti Virus software the right click will take longer to appear. I have tested it on my Win 2000 and with Mcafee enabled it takes 2.4 sec for the right click to appear however with No Anti Virus running it is Instantaneous.
Try it and see if it improves things.. then decide which is the biggest inconvenience!!
Hope it helps
