i have a weird problem. Today i started my computer and all the icons were in 16 colors. So i went into the display control panel and it was alreasy checked to display all icons in as many colors possible. Then i check HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\Shell Icon BPP and its already set to 16 as its suppose to be. My icons are still at 16 colors instead of true color. any help would be appreciated.

Had exactly the same prob.. got some info on it here:
http://windows2000.about.com
The problem seems to be, oddly, related to netmeeting.

It screws up the icons and the way I fixed it was by taking over another desktop [in this case our server], running the remote desktop full screen and then closing the program and hitting f5 on my desktop. It is REALLY weird, tweakui and deleting shelliconcache does not always work.

I had a hell of a time trying to figure this out and the problem seems to be fairly common.

found more stuff here http://dzeus.student.utwente.nl/g400/win2kissues.html

"Problem Description: When the desktop sharing feature of MS NetMeeting is enabled, hardware Direct3D acceleration is disabled.
Reproduction Info: Enable desktop sharing in Netmeeting, and load a Direct3D game. Performance will decrease incredibly, because software Direct3D acceleration is used in stead of hardware acceleration
Possible solution(s): Disable MS NetMeeting desktop sharing by doing the following:

To reenable Direct3D, enable desktop sharing (not just sharing a window) by using the desktop sharing wizard, right-click on the Desktop sharing icon (NOT the Netmeeting icon) in the taskbar and chose "Exit". Go back into the desktop sharing configuration and disable Desktop Sharing on your computer. Reboot and D3D should be back. If the desktop icons are still in 16 color, go into display properties, click the Effects tab, turn "display icons in all possible colors" to OFF, clicked Apply, turn it back on again and hit "Apply" again"
