In Win98 System Configuration Utility, under the Startup tab, I have many programs listed that are no longer on my system.

I'd like to remove those from the list.

Where in the registry do I find this?

iwebster,

Try Registry Guide this site:

Launching Programs When Windows Starts

Hey, thanks very much for the info.

I was snooping around the registry, and suspected those "Registry Keys" were the necessary ones that you also recommended in your reply.

But, I didn't want to do anything until someone supported my initial thoughts -- so, I appreciate your confirmation.

BTW, while waiting for your answer, I found a nifty little free program that makes the task easier.

Go to:
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

His program is just 66Kb, and as I said it's free.

Nice link, thanks

BTW, Please don't rely on my opinion too heavily as I am relatively "new" to registry and its machinations. Stick around and follow advice from the core group here. If you wander around you will see their names associated with "reliable" counsel everywhere.

iwebster,

To permanently remove the unchecked entries, Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run-
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices-
and delete the entry in the right pane.

reghakr,

Thanks for your post.

The keys you cite are the akin to those referenced by Smitty's link:

http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/109/

But, as you note, the Smitty keys don't reference the "Run-" keys, only the "Run" keys.

As well, I did discover the little program I found called "Startup Control Panel" (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml), does not cover the "Run-" keys, only the "Run" keys.

Though "Startup Control Panel" is a handy little tool, the keys you cite are the necessary ones to remove unused entries.

Thanks,
iwebster

Smitty,

Thanks again.

In the threads of this post you'll see reghakr reply.
His info covers the "Run-" keys, which are the ones to go to for removing unused entries.

Also, you advice is well heeded on knowing who to take "reliable" counsel from. Much appreciated.

P.S. For what it's worth dept. -- I been using for a couple of years the program "Registry Editor Plus", which can be downloaded free from PC Magazine.

For me, it's a very safe way to work on the registry.
