After further checking, that looks like the contents of the command.com file itself. What message do you get when you try to start?

Startup with a bootdisk, edit c:\msdos.sys and make sure it says:

[Options]
BootGUI=1
BootWin=1

Then rename yopur autoexec.bat to autoexec.old.
tap Alt_Ctl_Del to restart.

I checked and both autoexe.bat and msldos.sys both are the same (corrupt). I cannot imagine how this happened but it has not effected anything else (I think). I did what you said about changing my config.sys file but I did not quite undestand what you mean by:

>>Then rename yopur autoexec.bat to autoexec.old.
>>tap Alt_Ctl_Del to restart.

Why do this?

it is always a good pratice to backup your autoexec.bat when ever you change it. That is all he was having you do

How are you accessing these files?

First thing to do is rename autoexec.bat to autoexec.old. and config.sys to config.old They are not neccessary for Win9x.

DOS commands go in the Exit To Dos and dosstart.bat files in the c:\windows directory.

Hi Reghakr. I saw your entry about renaming Autoexec.bat and Config.sys to Autoexec.Old and Config.Old. Do you mean in the Registry Files? I am running Windows 98SE. I do seem to have a problem though, both my Autoexec.bat and Config.sys in System Configuration Utility are empty. Things appear to be running OK though.

Capricorn,

They should be empty. The only reason one might appear on a Win9x/ME machine is if a virus scanner is setup to scan on bootup.

Thanks for that information. They have always had entries in them such as Echo Off and a reference to 44 being the Country Code. All of those entries were loaded by Windows when I first loaded the Operating System. They only disappeared when I did some cleaning up of my C drive entries. On another point I have just been listening to the News- God Bless America, the defender of the free world.
