At a certain point I suddenly lost the ability to modify the taskbar (all I want is to reinstate Auto hide)

When I right-click and select Properties I can only get the following message:
"This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on this computer. Please contact your system administrator"

As this is a home single-user system I guess I am the de facto administrator. I have not been able to find any place in the registry that addresses this.

A restriction NoSetTaskbar comes to mind.

Go to Start/run, and type Regedit.

Go to Edit/find, and type NoSetTaskbar.
When found, highlight, and choose delete.

Good luck, Tony

I could not see "NoSetTaskbar", but after using "Find", then deleting, this worked. Thanks Tony.

Pleasure!

Here's a lot of information on various possible restrictions: http://members.aol.com/axcel216/newtip9.htm
