Hey,

Well... I have a working copy of Windows XP Final on a CD. Ive installed it on a slave drive on my dad's computer, and everything worked fine. All I did is popped in the CD while I was on his ME, and followed directions through advanced setup. SO now he has ME (on master HD) and XP (on slave). I also decided to install XP on my computer, I have 1 hard drive, so that is why Im planning on doing a clean install (that means my current OS will be deleted and XP installed). This is the problem: When I start setup and do all the steps, when I get to a restart step, the computer shuts itself down, then boots and goes back no Windows!!! I dont understand why it does that... BTW, im on Windows 98, and it said it SHOULD work, and it SHOULD start installing XP through DOS after the restart, because that is what it did when I installed it on my dads PC. Can somebody please help?

I am on:

Sony Vaio PCV-L400
PII @ 400MHz
256RAM
30GIG (single) HD

Thank you in advance and I really appreciate it.

In other words.... My computer does not launch DOs after boot and let me selct OS I want to start. WHY is that? Because if you're doing the installation, and it asked for a restart, it should let me chose if I want to start Windows 98 or WIndows XP Installation.

Thats what it should say.... thanx again.
Maybe I should get like a boot manager or something, but it should work without one right?

whew, i finally installed it. But I do have 1 more problem though... I DONT have Windows 98 anymoe, but every time I boot the PC, OS selection screen comes up, with Windows XP & WIndows 98 on it. I dont need 98 there, and nothing even happens if I select it. How do I get rid of it? Thank you very much in advance.

From the Control Panel start the System applet and choose the Advanced tab.
Click on the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery area.
In the new dialog window, click Edit in the System Startup area. You will be shown the boot.ini file in Notepad.

In the section [operating systems] you will see two (possibly three) entries. Delete the line that has the option for Win98.
Save the file and quit Notepad.

You may want to configure other startup items at this time too - eg uncheck the "Show list of OSes" button.

May J ask you if you experienced any activation problems by installing XP an two machines (not quite to the EULA J believe) ?

I believe MS allows two installs before forcing you to call in. ie. main PC and a laptop. Unless of course you have a copy that supports the OLP.
