Hi,
When I try to startup my Win98 system, it seems to load fine until it gets to the desktop. At that point, I get the "this program has performed an illegal operation". When I go into details, its says that EXPLORER.EXE has caused an invalid page fault in module explorer.exe at 015f:0041f31 I have run scandisk, no errors. Increased my stacks, etc. I can't even get into safemode! Then, when I do a ctrl+alt+delete there is nothing in the window to close! Completely empty. Just my desktop and cursor. No taskbar, nothing! Help! Thanks in advance!

Hi
I had the same problem because i puth puth something in the starmenu
Because I saw in regedit that if you go to this map HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT>CLSID you get a list of programs with their codes with it and if you type in the startmenu a map with just a name and you change the extension to one of that codes, that you get a link to that program (this trick only works with control panel), so i was treiing untill my computer stop's and i have to restart again (witch is a normal case for my computer), but explorer did'nt want to start annymore also in dos.
well i think that you did'nt have did the same as me, but maybe a bad program did something like this
than just go to dos, search the map of startmenu and maybe jou wi'll find the problem

"...this trick only works with control panel..."
this should also work with a row of other shell special folders, that have a GUID as definition.

Of course there isn't naything in the box, it hasn't loaded yet.
When did this start?
Did you install or uninstall anything?
Have you trtied a registry restore?
For extreme cases:
Hit F8 on startup, and choose Command Prompt. Type edit c:\windows\system.ini Under
[boot] Change
shell=;Explorer.exe
shell=progman.exe
If Program manager loads go to File>Run, type msconfig, go to the Startup tab and uncheck everything.
Either go back and change system.ini to the original or if you're comfortable using File manager, you can type Winfile under the File>Run and check your configuration files.
To open autoexec.bat, you go to the root of C: drive, highlight it, choose Run from the file menu and type notepad autoexec.bat
Hopefully this will get you back in.

Is it possible to make "shell special folders" and give them a "GUID" defenition?

(don't mind if you do not understand everything yet - some of this is advanced operating system / shell configuration)
