Is there any way around this? According to Microsoft there isn't (see: http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?id=kb;en-us;Q230684) but I could swear I got all documents to open in one window once before by tweaking something using RegEdit.... I just forget how I did it. Anyone know?

as the KB article explains, the MSWord logic has changed from MDI to SDI. No registry setting can override this logic change.

Does Microsoft do this sort of thing to torture people just because they can?

But have you can get back the MDI effect (J just made some extra research and learning effort):
--------- quote MS Word Office XP ------------
Show or hide multiple program icons on the Windows taskbar
Selecting this check box will display a separate icon on the Microsoft Windows taskbar for each open window in your Office program. Clearing this check box will display a single icon for your Office program on the Windows taskbar.
On the Tools menu in your program, click Options, and then click the View tab.
Select or clear the Windows in taskbar check box.
Note This option is not available in Windows NT 4.0.
--------- end quote ---------------
