Windows ME
I have a folder in Program Files called Windows Update.
It contains hundreds of files listed under 'Type'
CFG|DES|AS File|BKF|PLT|Configuration Settings|Security Catalog|JPG|BM|Setup Info|INV|W98|Cabinet File|MIL|Application Extension (dll files)
Advice about removing this lot would be very much appreciated.
Brian.

J have not found a reference in my short search of MS documentation, so J am not sure about this:
Windows Update site has also uninstall capabilities for certain downloaded items (see the History button at MS site). J believe these are the backup files to be able to rollback to the previous version of upgraded software.

Thanks Richard...
Had a look round the ever confusing Microsoft site and couldn't see that button.
I think you are right about them being files needed to roll back to previous version.
Just not keen on a folder with 7Mg's of data getting bigger by the day.
Oh well... That's ME I suppose.
Thanks Richard,
Brian.

The updates from Windows Update are usually in a hidden folder (called Windows Update) under the c:\Program Files directory. I don't know why yours ended up here. Do a search and see if you have files there also.

Brian, Take a look at the _restore folder size. Now there's a waste of space and it builds every day.

To disable the System Restore feature

Right-click on the 'My Computer' icon, and click properties

Click the performances tab

Click the file system button

Now click the repair tab and check the 'Disable System Restore' checkbox

You can still use scanregw in Windows ME to restore a previous registry.

"...Had a look round the ever confusing Microsoft site ..."
sorry if my description was misleading, let me show you thru:
from Start menu choose the Windows Update entry and you should arrive at MS site.
choose "Product Updates" link in text
on that page you should find a blue (at least in my colour scheme) button with text "Show Installed Updates"
Click and look thru the list, many items should be marked with "Already Installed", and on several you can see an arrow marked with "Uninstall".

"Just not keen on a folder ... getting bigger by the day..."
really growing ? Sounds strange.

"...files needed to roll back to previous version..."
Make an experiment:
If you have no intention to uninstall, first create a save of the directory contents (possibly first a disk copy to be able to restore quickly), then delete the contents. Try working - J believe all this stuff is inactive.
If you are happy with the temporary result and never need the stuff again - drop it.
Worst case that can happen if you find out that you need to rollback: re-install WinMe.

PS J have not tested this myself.

Thanks Richard... MS site OK but nothing marked Uninstall. Think I'll settle for these files being necessary for 'Restore' and find something else to worry about. Very much obliged for your assistance, to say the least.
