Anyone else getting "HTTP:500 Errors" when moving from one page to another? I encounter this from my home PC (WinME on a Dell 1GB/256M/56K Dialup), from my company laptop (Dell Latitude 866MHz/256M/Win98 - both 56K Dialup and LAN) only on this site. I also find it on both with IE5, IE5.5, and Netscape 4.73. Is there a setting I need to use to make the page swaps happen without having to hit Shift/Refresh several times?

Thanks in advance.
Cheers.

yes - happens to me too since a few weeks (somewhat since end of July). Until now J have assumed that this is a result of the Code/Red/ virus flooding the net and blocking traffic to the WinGuides server. J will notify the Webmaster.

Any updates on the root cause of this problem ? I too keep getting 10053 errors when moving between pages. This has been happening for several weeks. I do not have the problem with any other sites.

I have had several problems, and have been emailing Simon with the info. Let's see if this one registers.

Hi Richard =

Finally I can post and reply; I've been in touch with Simon, and some of the 'bugs' have been resolved. I still get 'Doc contains no data' messages, but after four or five times the page finally loads. Then I couldn't reply, that was some type of referrer tag error that Simon fixed.

I don't think it's the Code Red bug; my Norton AV is up to date and has trapped and deleted several emails with that nasty, plus this is the only site that is giving me these hits on a recurrent basis. I also have a laptop, and get the same errors from both the other ISP and the corporate LAN access.

Any added info anyone can pass to Simon will probably help him in tracking down the problems.

Cheers.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm still trying to track down the problem -- the hosting company has been advised as it now seems to be a server error.

If it continues much longer I will be moving the site over to a new more powerful (& reliable) server.

I still not sure what the problem is or what cause it but it seems that the no response from server pops up as fast as you click the button

it is as if the browser doesn't even try to ping the site

I added these two entries to my host file are there any more that I can add it did not seem to resolve the issue just was wondering if there are any more I need

209.197.107.86 .winguides.com # look up override
209.197.107.137 .forums.winguides.com # lookup override

I'm puzzled ?????????
I am located in Texas USA where is the server located

I don't believe it is a DNS or connectivity issue anymore -- I've already tried using new DNS servers and that didn't seem to make a difference.

I think it is the web server closing the connection before it has sent all or any of the data.

FYI, the server is located in Pittsburg, PA. Although if these problems continue it will be moving to a new provider in Texas.

I edited my post above
I looked at some explain host files I don't know if it is a fluke but when I added the dot before it my pages seem to load very quick almost like I had DSL

Maybe somebody else can try it to see what happens

I have not gotten any errors since added these entries with the dot

I quess I don't know just had one no response after surfing for awhile??????/

Thanks

"...I don't think it's the Code Red bug..."
actually J did not mean that you were having the Code Red bug, but that WinGuides Site may have been a target on its HTTP port and that the traffic load there and in the net in general may have been loaded.

"... WinGuides Site may have been a target on its HTTP port ..."

Thanks, Richard -

I believe that the way this Code Red bug operates (based on info from the Web) is the affected servers poll-out primarily to their own IP sequence; the '63.28.34.xxx' will poll everything in '63.xxx.xxx.xxx'. Based on my Zonealarm logs (I kept some from initial install back in May -- 1-2 hits an hour from various IPs) -- now I see 15-20 hits, and mostly from my POP's range of '63.28.xxx.xxx'; a few from my ISP's '207.xxx.xxx.xxx' along with one or two unrelated.

I still get "No Data' responses more often than not, but the fixes Simon has wrought seen to have stabilized the site access to where it is tolerable.

Cheers.

Could the issue at hand be a result of increased traffic that is bogging the server? I know that the North east Ohio Road Runner featured your site about 1.5 months ago. some thing to think about. (is there a particular time of day this is promenant?)

The site has now been moved onto a new (more powerful) server with a different provider. This should hopefully once and for all resolve the issues some people have been experiencing.

Thanks for your patience, especially anyone who has been inconvenienced by the recent issues.

No problem -- I haven't heard any bad reports, only improvements, so it looks like the change has finally removed the glitches.
