Ok, this prob is partially Windows , and partially a CD burning prob.
Tonight, (8,19,01) I attempted to copy a CD using the NERO burning ROM. The way this works is it copies the data from the CD on to your hard drive and then burns it onto the CD from your hard drive. While in the process of writing to the hard drive Windows decided to freeze. The only thing I could do was CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart. After I went to Windows System Information and made sure that the data was gone and to my surprise it wasn't!. The speace I had before I attempted to copy was only half know. I figured, OK I will just go and delete it, restore the space and start over. But where is this 700MB file?? I can't find it anywhere and Windows find tool can't find any file that has that extension. Any suggestions on how I can restore this space. I tried scanreg/restore from the prompt and restored from the 17th hoping this would maybe wipe it away with no such luck.
Windows 98
64MB RAM
P3 450Mhz
8.0GB Hard Drive
I know it is getting ancient but whatever!!
Please help me,
Regards

can only do some guessing and give you hints:
Doesn't Nero have an Options menu where you can define the temp file location ?
Where does it point to now ?
Clean up any of the standard temp directories: C:\TEMP, C:\TMP, C:\Windows\TEMP, C:\Windows\TMP (or wherever your environment variables TEMP and TMP point to).
In Windows Explorer, use View Options and let Hidden files be displayed too.
If you happen to have Scandisk inactive during boot, reactivate (->msconfig).

the easy way to find a file that you lost is to use the find in the explore file manager under the date or advanced setting
Sorry richard we were both answering this at the same time
just make sure you have set the show all files and uncheck hide all file extensions for..... in the folder options view window
I have no idea what the file ext is that you are using but this way you can see all the files created that day you can even search for by file size
you might try and look in the folder that program uses just maybe it is in there
Thanks
Mac!!!

First of all make sure you're showing all files obviously. Try searching the whole of your machine for all files (*.*) and sort the given list by size. There won't be many files around that size so you should be able to find it by checking the name and the time created.

There is a utility I use called "FindOrphans". It is used to remove useless .dll files. It stores these in what is called an "OrphanBin". You cannot find the file using the regular search tool. Maybe your files have been processed similarily. Just a thought.
FindOrphans maintains a hidden system folder named orphanbin.$$$ in the root directory of each local fixed drive. When you send a file to the Orphan bin, FindOrphans moves it, path and all, into this folder. For example, if you sent c:\windows\nogood.dll to the Orphan bin, it would become c:\orphanbin.$$$\windows\nogood.dll. Naturally these folders are ignored when FindOrphans does its scanning.

Do a defrag as well. Sometimes if I get Nero errors I 'lose' hard drive space as well and the only way to recover it is by doing a ddefrag (run scandisk first).

Right..
The only way I can "see" the Orphanbin files I mentioned is during defrag. The odd thing is that I cannot find the files with any wildcard settings at all. They simply don't show up? I was trying to create an analogous situation where "nero" created a "hidden" folder or repository for the files that wsnowball 'lost'. Try this on your computer. Craete a file (any file) and name it anyname.$$$, save it and then do a search on *(wildcard).$$$. You won't find it, at least I cannot on my machine.

download a program called zdelete from www.zdelete.com this wont help you find the file but it deletes all previously deleted data that you deleted since you had the computer it will give you back that hdd space i got back 3.4 gigs first time i ran it and dont worry it doesnt delete files on your computer just ones that have already been delete cause microshaft windows only deletes the file name not the file
