Howdy....I have this question that hopefully someone has an answer for. I have a new computer...with Win. 98 SE O/S..Pent. lll 800 Meg. processor...and it's a custom built. I have a Sony 52-X CD-ROM drive and a HP CD-RW drive. Normally when I would put a disc into my normal drive.."Sony"...you could readily hear it speed up and spin rather fast. And the same went for my HP CD-RW drive. I downloaded a program for a friends computer so his older operating system would be able to recognize his CD-ROM drive...the program/driver is called MSCDEX. I located the correct one for his system and downloaded it. When it came time to transfer the downloaded information to a 3.5 floppy disc my buddy opened the file on my computer by accident. After doing so "I" then downloaded the program to the 3.5 floppy for him and went around trying to delete anything on my puter that I thought may have been programmed by this disc. and didn't think anything more about it. A few days later when I tried to use my Sony CD drive..I noticed it didn't take off and spin way up like it used to...however it still worked. Later I tried to copy a disc from my D:\ drive "The Sony" to my E:\ HP CD-RW drive...and I kept getting errors saying that information wasn't being supplied fast enough. It also seems that my HP CD-RW drive isn't spinning as fast as it had. Thinking it was due to the accidental opening and installation of that MSCDEX file on my system...I figured the only way to cure the problem was to do a complete FORMAT C: and start over fresh....which I have done many times not only for my own computers...but for other people. After doing the FORMAT C: both my SONY and HP CD drive still won't spin up like they used to. HELP !!!! Could this MSCDEX.exe file have change some other settings that regulate that??? Like something in the BIOS....or else where??? Or is this totally conincedence????? I know there are alot of VERY Knowledgeable people out there and I only hope one of you can read this and help me. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.....Foxsniper22
