Well I've had the same problem on my old computer and I ended up having to send it to Compaq where they didn't know what to do either and just decided to basically give me a new computer. (Replace everything besides the frame and the HD) HP is not as nice, since they say it isn't hardware since it gets into safe mode. Well my computer loads up until the windows 98 logo appears. It seems to still be loading but it never finishes. I let it set for hours at a time but it never gets to my log on screen. I have a fairly recent computer, it is an HP 8770c with an 833 processor and a 40G HD. I've turned off all but systray and load power in safe mode. I can't reinstall windows cause my cd drive doesn't work now for some reason. The only way I can get into windows that is not in safe mode is go into registry and delete some of the built in drivers. It updates them when I restart then I get in for a little bit, but once I restart I have to delete the drivers again to get back in. Once in my DVD drive and cd rom drive are gone. The direct path I take to the registry is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->ENUM->MF. I delete the whole MF folder. Any reason why deleting this would let me in, or how would I fix this. What files are needed to be in the MF folder and what is not? Any help would be appreciated; this is my computers last hope.

if you use your emergency boot disk you can boot in dos mode with cd inabled .....then load the cd in to the tray close the door use your dos command to start the cd
and do a restore my computer has two cd one of them is restore........but use this as a last restort because all of the registry stuff will be lost.......
this is my two cents!!!!!
but my first question what had you played with before this happen!!!!!!
you might need yto delete this stuff in the system property window and let it rebuild that way somebody here has to know more
I delete a registry enter once and the only way to get it to restore it was delete some stuff in the device manager
MAC!!!!!

All I did was update MSN Instant MSG then restarted, then restarted again. Then just restarted later to turn off fan in computer so could sleep, and when turned back on that problem happened. I don't have a boot disk. I think Ill try to reinstall, but I cant aford to loose my 30Gigs of video editings.
