I am trying to install some programs from a CD on my computer that have been zipped but can't get them to open. The icon that is associated with them is the Iexplorer icon but when I click on them they don't open. When I put the CD in a different computer some of them have a different icon that looks like a vise. how can I open these programs?

Billy,
You did say they were zipped, so I'm assumming you know what a zip file is and whether or not you have a unzipping program.
If they have the IE icon, then maybe your zip file asociation is messed up. Open Windows Explorer, go to View>FolderOptions, click the File Types tab, scroll till you find the .zip extension, click the edit button and type in the path to your unzipping program.
If it has spaces in the directory name, put "'s around the statement. Then add this to the very end..."%1" An example:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINZIP\winzip32.exe" "%1"

As far as I know neither computer has WinZip on it. They both just had a Low Level format done. I'm trying to install a driver for the modem for one computer that I had downloaded from the internet with the other computer and burned to a CD. When I first inserted the CD it showed an icon for the modem driver but when I tried to open it, it asked me what program I wanted to open it with, I didn't know so I just guessed it was Iexpore now ANY program disc that I insert has the IExpore icon associated and won't open.
The other computer will open the programs and unzip them. Although I did'nt download WinZip, it must be on my computer, even though I can't find it anywhere. Maybe WinZip is on the CD or something. If I could find it I would make a copy and install it on the other computer but until I get the modem driver to open I can't go on line to download WinZip.

click on the start button and look up do you see the vise on your putter or the other putter
also do a search for winzip on your putter and the other one using the exploer
you get explore by right click the start button click on explorer
if you see the vise on the other putter it has to be on it

Why is everyone assuming that either computer has WinZip on it?
BillV, download WinZip and install it on your machine. Try it out, and if you're not comfortable with it, come back here for more advice.

I assumed the second putter has winzip cause he saw the icon for it on the second putter the first putter is in question now plus he said the first putter is down cause needs the drivers install to get online
You can download it on the other putter the file is only 1.2mb if you use a blank format floppy it will fit on it .... a blank floppy is 1.41mb
MAC!!!!!
once you unzip it then you will still need to install it

Thanks for the replies guys. I was away for awhile.
Yes, I discovered that the second computer did have WinZip on it after all. My brother had put it on there for me when he did a Low Level format on it. I am doing my first ever Low Level format on the other computer and don't really know what I'm doing but I'm learning. I made a copy of WinZip and am now going to install it. Thanks again.

If you are just getting into this you might want to read my other post ....... there is allot of stuff you need to do to keep your putter running..plus I listed some stuff that you don't want to download
and watch your email very carefully dont open anything from whom you don't know and even then be carefull it could be a cloned email with a virus.....

Good Luck Mac!!!!!
P.S.
also if you look at some of the post under my nic you will find some good information that these guys have given me about getting rid of those ads I have stuck with adsubtract cause some of the other programs I tried just did not work correctly and crashed also in some of the post they tell me about how to add stuff so you can have sites restricted but it gets involded requires tweaking using a .reg file just click on coolsights then next screen will appear where you can view all post
Even the new computer crash I was in a store today looking at a new one just looking and somebody had left a program open I clicked the X and got a fault exception error!!!! LOL

Thanks coolsights, I am just getting into this stuff so I'll look over your link. I think it might be over my head though, I'm not even sure what a registry is.
I thought I had made a copy of WinZip to a floppy, but when I went to load it on the other computer I apparently had just copied the icon. I had just clicked send to floppy drive from the desk top icon but that didn't work.
How can I copy WinZip to a floppy? I know how to burn it to a CD but don't want waste one if it will fit on a floppy. Also how can I erase the icon I that already copied to the floppy?

You copied the short cut to the disk a:
just use the other computer and down load it from the site so you get all of it............ when ask what to do click save then select the a: drive at the top
the easy way to delete the other file is before you click ok to save it on the a:drive just right click what you already save on the a:drive the short cut and when the pop up shows just delete it then click ok and the new file will download on to the a:drive
P.S. you prob don't need to worry about the other file cause it is small so both file will fit on a: just remeber the file you will be downloading is an .exe file
Thanks

I can't download WinZip from the other computer because I need it to unzip the driver for the modem before I can get online.
I guess I can burn it to a CD, but is there a way to copy the whole WinZip program to a floppy, not just the short cut?

use the computer that you place this message with to download the file to a floppy
I have no way to know where the install program is saved on the putter that has it
so just download it from the site with the putter that you can connect to the internet on and saved it to the a drive then take that disk and load it on the putter that is broke.....
Thanks

I'm at work now so I'll have to do it when I get home.
Are you saying that the Install program is separate from the WinZip program itself?
I have no problem finding WinZip, It is listed under my programs, but everything I've tried so far has just sent the shortcut to the a drive, I'm sure I'm doing something wrong but if I can't figure it out I guess I can download it from the website and send it straight to the a drive that way. Or I could just burn it to a CD. I guess I just don't understand how a floppy drive works.

The icon that you are click on the desktop runs the winzip program you have to download the install program then install it on the computer
it is like a car it is were you put the key to start it but if there is no engine it will not go anywhere
the install program for winzip puts the engine transmission tires and gas on the hard drive then when you put the key(click the icon) in it works
when you install a program most of time there are allot of others little files used to run the program
you just have to enter in the right place to get it going that is the icon
after you download and install winzip just doubleclick on the driver file name hopefully it will be a good program and do the rest for ya!!!!
Thanks

Well I finally figured out how to get WinZip to the a: drive, I went in the program files folder found WinZip right clicked send to. Problem is it takes three floppy disc to hold the program 2.97 MB yet when I downloaded the program from the website it was only 1.2 MB Somehow the program got larger after it was installed.
