Interner explorer 5.5 error message

When I go the the "Windows Updates" site & click on "product updates" & the site starts checking for available updates, I get a Iexplore message,(This program has performed an illegal operation & will be shut down). When I click on close I get a "Microsoft Internet Explorer message, (An error has occured in Internet Explorer, Internet Explorer will close, if you continue to experience problem, restart your computer. Re-starting has not helped when I reture to Updates site.

First I would recommend you dump the Temporary internet files and History.
