I have a AMD K6-2 system with onboard sound and graphics. I'm playing with upgrading the graphics via a PCI slot (no AGP available) and have just installed a 4Mb card and drivers. Everthing is fine, with 1024x768 resolution and 32Bit true colour. However when I tried to run a couple of games I was told that my monitor colour settings would have to be increased to 256 colours. I couldn't figure this out as on my desktop I definitely had 32 bit colour. Then I saw that under "Display properties - settings" there are two entries under display, firstly the new graphics accelerator and my monitor and then second the onboard driver with a default display. This second entry had been set to low resolution and only 16 colours, and although this is not the display and driver my system is obviously using the games were in some way referring to it as a reference. When I changed the settings for this second display the games worked fine even though as I said it is not the display being used. Does this mean the onboard graphics are still being used and do I need to disable them in some way (the only option I see in the BIOS is for onboard AGP). The card is obviously working because I have an good picture I guess I'm just trying to understand moe how it integrates with my system and takes some of the load off my CPU. Sorry this is a little long, but I appreciate any thoughts anyone has. Thanks.

Did you disable the onboard AGP? If so, I can't help you. But the onboard AGP should be the intregrated video. Disable it and once you go back into Windows, it will not find the integrated video and the card you installed will now be the only card.

What games do you play? 4MB video memory sounds a bit small for newer games.

You may have to change a jumper setting on your MOBO to disable the on-board graphics, and you may only be able to use one PCI slot for your new graphics card. Check your MOBO manual for instructions for this.

I am using a HP pavilion computer and at ther web site they have a procedure that you have to do before you install a new display card so the the new card is detected correctly

You can use this page as an example
