Win NT 4.0: I can't import into the registry

When I double click on a .reg file it opens up notepad and I can see the registry entries to be imported but I can't import them.

open Windows Explorer, open the View dialog, select the File Types tab.
In the file type list, scroll to REG and select it.
In the lower part of the dialog click on the Advanced button.
You should see a list of commands, Open , Print etc.
One of these commands should read Merge. select this line and click on the Default button.

Warning: be sure you want this really - opening up notepad prevents you from accidentially adding (overwriting) things to the registry.
