I would like to be able to edit an old Yahoo ID out of my USER.DAT file. If I search using Windows Explorer, I can find it in USER.DAT, but can't open the file to edit. If I search using regedit or regcleaner, the old ID doesn't appear to be there. I have run regcleaner and removed as many extraneous items as I can, but this ID remains....

Actually, I don't think that Yahoo has stored anything on your computer. Just because you search for *username* and find it in user.dat does not mean it's there. For example, if the user ID was....."bob", a search would pick up "oobby"

TANGY69,
Try hitting F8 on startup, choose command prompt only. At the c: prompt, type:
cd\windows\command
then type:
scanreg /opt
This will reduce the size ( an hopefully remove the old entry). It's done automatically if there is 500KB+ of unused space.

Thank you; I believe that you are probably correct, but it still frustrates me that this extraneous information is there and I can't get to it or eliminate/edit it.

Thank-you; I will try this and see what happens.
