I am setting up some new PCs for a Staff Internet Cafe. The previous PCs ran NT, but as Win2K has lots of advantages (so I am told) and it is pre-installed on the new PCs I am now using this. One very useful feature of Win2K is that it "Repairs itself". This is useful unless you are trying to remove a program which is part of the OS! The PCs have software installed to prevent access to the system but I am having problems preventing use of OE. We are not permitting use of Outlook Express as managing potentially 1000+ POP accounts on five PCs does not bear thinking about!!! To prevent users launching OE in NT I simply uninstalled it from the Add Remove Programs Dialog. This option is not available in Win2K. Being a resourcefull chap(?) I decided to rename the .exe file. Windows 2K promptly created another copy of the file!!!! Anyone know if there is a way of disabling Outlook Express?

Michael -

I also work in an environment where we permanently wanted to remove outlook express.

Look at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q263/8/37.asp for Microsoft's way of uninstalling and reinstalling Outlook Express.

This technique may need to be repeated as you update machines w/ Service Packs (for the OS or IE).

Also what I found most useful was to download the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) and configure a setup w/o Outlook Express and install that. Following that I created a batch file to remove the files detail in that Microsoft article above.

Hope that helps :o)
