I'v always used my puter without any login or user acount, cuz I'm the only user there. All of my setting and reg tweaks are aplied directly to the default user. That's me.

I have just set up a small LAN at home with my neigbors. But now, every time I start windows, I get this damn login prompt. So now I cant use the network if I dont login with a user name.
If I press ESC or click on CANCEL, I get the default windows profile but without the network.
If I type a name and click OK, windows asks me if I want it to remember the setting. At that point, I know windows wants me to create a new user profile, so I click CANCEL. But that damn O.S. still logs me with another profile. Ok, I have acces to the network, but most of my tweaks are gone and windows puts outlook express shortcuts everywhere.

Is there a way I can acces the network with the default user profile?

Bonus question: How can I stop those outlook express shortcuts to appear in the taskbar, desktop and start menu?

J am not at a Win9x machine, so my description may miss some details:

go to ControlPanel>User applet.
you should see an entry Standard plus porbably those that you created with giving a user name on the network logon panel.
Remove all but "Standard".
Create a user entry as a full copy of Standard, that should give you back most of your settings, J am not quite sure if it makes a full copy of the User.dat file too - you may loose some of the settings done with Regedit.
Then reboot, when the network singon shows up, give it the new user name but no password ! You should startup with a copy of your original profile.
reboot once more -> as you did not give a password, the logon panel should not show up anymore. If it still does - for this case there exists a registry setting to inhibit it.

J am just wondering, if you specify Standard as the logon name, if it accepts the original user, without creating a new user. In my several setups J always kept the Standard settings frozen as a template for new users.

After playing with windows 98 I have found the password stuff is keep in the system.ini file if you delete these entries it will ask you for a new password just click on cancel (after you reboot)and you will not need a password anymore
it looks like this
[Password Lists]
DEFAULT=C:\WINDOWS\DEFAULT.PWL
HP AUTHORIZED CUSTOM=C:\WINDOWS\Hpauthor.pwl
......also with the way windows stores the stuff if you install stuff and you are not on the default desktop the registry stuff gets put in the user.dat file for that user profile then the other user get short change on settings
also in the network(this is in the control panel) configuration the setting proabilly got changed when you install the network

if you put a passord in after you installed the network it will always want a passord so you need to delete the stuff in the system.ini then click on cancel when you reboot (just delete the .pwl files above leave the header [password lists]

when you add a new user it will use the user.dat file in the c:\windows directory and make a clean desktop........
if you make a copy of a user it uses the user.dat file under thier profile and you do not get a clean desktop it passes all the stuff they have changed

you may have to reinstall the software after you delete the stuff above when it ask for a password click cancel.......

If you haven't got it yet, this one never fails:
And yes you'll still have Network access.

And finally, if all else fails:

Try #3 first, it may do the trick alone, if not go through the following steps.

1. Go to Start>Find>Files & Folders... type in *.pwl and delete all .pwl files in c:\windows

2. Go to start>Run, type sysedit. Maximize the system.ini
Delete all lines under
[Password Lists]

3. Go to ControlPanel>Network
Choose Windows Logon as Primary Login

Reboot

You should now get the login box one last time. Type in your name. Just click OK for no password.

Not yet, try:
Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr ent version\network\real mode net\
Right-click on Real Mode Net, choose new>Binary value, name it AutoLogon
and give it a value of 01 00 00 00.

Not Yet?
Try
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon
if there is an entry named MustBeValidated, right-click on it, choose modify and type in 00 00 00 00.

Thanks!
Well, I did'nt try yet all the stuff you mention, but that step 3 did the job:

> 3. Go to ControlPanel>Network
> Choose Windows Logon as Primary Login

But i'll try all the other stuff just for fun.
