I there a way to prevent users from moving the icons placed on the desktop. If the Icon coordinates are stored in a file somewhere, maybe I could put that file in read only.

come on!
I realy need help on this one. I still haven't found it.
Or maybe there's a way the icons will be back in place after reboot or logout.

You could always use the NoDesktop key to get ird of the icons all together... Or, you could prevent Saving Settings on logout. They are both in the recent archives on the site.

Great!
I found the tweak at:
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/152/
But I would still like to know where windows saves these settings?

Nope!
Doesn't work. I tried the tweak but I can still move the icons on my desktop and the position still gets saved at restart. I also tried to use a binary value instead of an Dword like suggested but made no diffrence. I think it would be good if I knew where these settings and icon positions are saved.

In essance, what the NoSaveSettings tweak does is prevent Windows from writing data to HKCU Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer \Streams\Desktop. So what can be done when NoSaveSettings doesn't work is to get the desktop the way you want it, log off or shut down (this writes the setting into the registry; before logoff it's in memory) export the above registry key, and in the autoexec.bat file of your machine run "regedit (filename).reg" and this imports the data of the icon locations into the registry. If you are working on a network with multiple users, you can run this from the login script and the desktop will be restored at each logon.

Thanks for the tip. I'm now using a 3rd party tool that does the job realy well, but this is a good trick to!
Thanks again.

Yes it does, and much more. Realy cool app!
<a target="_blank" href=http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,10615,77408,00.html>It's called IconLock</a>
But it gets killed if Explorer crashes.
<a target="_blank" href=http://www.winguides.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=genwin&Number=25464>Check this link</a> to see how to fix the problem.
