I've got a Quantex (out of business) laptop running Win 98. In the past couple of days, the computer has stopped "seeing" my cd-rom drive. I've done the f8 thing and started with that command line option. Sometimes it sees the cd-rom and loads the ATAPI driver, but most times it doesn't see the drive so it doesn't load the driver. I thought this was a conflict with my zip100 drive, so I disconnected it and removed the software, but it didn't make a difference. The cd-rom drive is a Toshiba XM-1802-B

This is driving me crazy. Can anyone help?

Sounds to me as if you are experienceing a hardware problem. Have your machine checked out. In the best case a connector may have loosened between the cdrom drive and the motherboard, in the worst case your cdrom may need a replacement. Should you have a cdrom drive that can be removed, take it out and set it firmly back in again.
