I have a small peer to peer workgroup with 4 Win2000 and 2 Win 98 computers. I share the CD ROM on one of the WIN2000. If I go through Network Neighborhood from one of the other Win 2000 computers, I am asked for a username and password to get on, so I give it the Administrator name and password that resides on the PC with the shared CD ROM drive and everything is fine. However, from the WIN98 PC's, it says \\computername\IPC$ and I am ONLY given a password option with no username. The admin password does not work. In this case what is the signifiance of that path name with the \IPC$. Any thoughts?

Thanks a lot

Hi, If you dont have Client for Microsoft installed, then you might this error message.
Reason for getting that error message is, you are not authonticated on Win2K server or Domain.
Installed the MS Client and then try to access the share on WIN2K.

This is in a peer to peer network. so there is no server or domain environent. Client for Microsoft Networks is installed on all the PC'S.

I ran into this problem and here was what i did to fix it, there is a couple of options. You need a few pieces of information handy first, but i am sure you will have no problem getting them if you don't know them off the top of your head.

Since you are setup on a peer to peer network you will be logging into your windows 98 machines with some logon name and password. There are two routes you can take. The first is to logon using the administrator account on the windows 2000 machine with your CDROM drive. This way when you attempt to access it the credentials are authenticated on the windows 2000 machine. Secondly, if you want to keep logging on as the same user on your windows 98 machines, add this user to your windows 2000 machine. This can be achieved a few ways. The easiest is to type "net user Username Password /add" at the command prompt. OR you can go in through the control panel and open up Users and Passwords and add the user in there. As for modifying the group the user is in, you can handle that, what it HAS to be will depend on what access level you gave the share on the CDROM drive.

Hope this helps.
