I have had a problem for a month or 2....
Several of my programs on my Desktop will not start up. I get the dreaded Windows pop-up "_______ program has encountered a problem and needs to close",it pops up almost instantly when I try to open some programs. I have R&R these programs but does not help.
The odd thing is that this all this happened about the time I installed Spyware Doctor.(My subscription had run out for a few months) I've tried everything I can think of to cure this but nothing helps, but now I realize this started when I installed S.D. It seems like something is blocking the programs from starting.

Anyone have any ideas,I'm stuck!!!!

(I love S.D. and will stick with it!,I've used it for about 5 years.)

I really miss using FileHippo Updater, and Readon TV for free movies, among other programs that refuse to work now...:(

I have a suspicion that your user profile got corrupted.

You should run a full SD scan.

I just got thru fixing a PC that some malware prevented ALL icons from running any programs, yet the programs worked with another profile.

Here is an article that may help.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Fix-a-corrupted-user-profile

Some cautions... you need to save Outlook Express, Outlook, Windows, Windows Live e-mail folders if you wish to save contacts and mail.

The Microsoft procedure did not work for my case as the profile was terminally corrupt.

I had to create a new profile, log into that profile, then from the old profile copy the favorites and desktop icons, save the emails and address books, delete the profile and take the option to save the files as a desktop folder in the new profile.

Then you have to import the e-mail data into the appropriate program.

Kind of convoluted, but it worked and saved all the data.

I just tried something- I "Shutdown" S.D. and restarted the computer,my programs that would not start will start now(some I had to R&R). I restarted the computer and they still work!!
I am extremely happy now,but confused why they previously seemed blocked???
I do remember from past experiences I had to stop S.D. to install some new programs....
I don't know what happened but I'm really happy now,I've suffered for a long time without some of my favorite programs, and figured I would have to spend a lot of cash at a computer repair shop.:)
But I sure wish I knew why this problem was...
Maybe others can benefit from this.
This forum has helped me a lot, thanks folks.

Strange. What OS are you on?

Windows XP SP2. I had Norman Security Suite when I installed S.D. and shortly after the computer crashed, and lots of things were messed up.
NSS subscription was almost expired,so I removed it and kept S.D.,it seemed the 2 programs clashed. Everything was ok except some programs would not work anymore...I tried re-installing programs in safe mode, but it did not help.
One of life's little unsolved mysteries?:o

Couple of things.

SP2 is now off Microsoft support, if you want future updates and such, you might want to consider geting SP3. If you do go forward with that, make sure that you temporarily disable SD and any other active protection that you may have.

Norman (and any other antimalware you may have tried in the passt) probably left stuff behind. Check your hidden device drivers. Here is how>

Also, if you EVER had Norton or McAfee, you should go to their respective websites and get the removal tool and run it.

See if that helps.

I've had the same kind of problems with game hacks(i only hack on non-punkbuster servers...so no flames kiddies plz).
Even if i put them on the exception list...they won't start or are severely hindered.
Is there any way to put them on the whitelist or at least a way to stop spywaredoctor from blocking them.
If i restart my computer without SD they all work as intended...
Strangely enough even if i quit SDfrom traybar, the programs still don't work...but after a restart(without loading SD of course) they will work just fine.
The programs do not get "detected" as a virus/malware...so i can't send you a a detection report.
I did not have this problem with version 6. Maybe you could check what has changed ?

Please zip up the history log and attache it with a reply so it can be evaluated.

i would love to but like i said...it just blocks it...no detection what so ever.
After fidling about and deactivating the AV(not SD) it does work again.
It seems that the av is blocking some programs from running....might be an idea to see if something is constructed wrong in the AV itself ?

Will your programs in question start if you disabled SD/SDAV? Right-click the icon next to your system clock and select "SHutDown".

All the best!

Just shutting them down from the icon will not work !
I told you this before. It seems to be a bug in the AV part of the software.
Once you reboot without it, the programs will run just fine.
And ,no, adding them to the exception list won't work since they were never detected.

Correct me if I'm wrong, you said theat AV is blocking the crack games that you have downloaded?

And per your other forum post, you said you have SDAV but you disabled AV and issue has been resolved?

May I know what are those games?

If AV is detecting the add ons of the crack in the file, we will not be able to add that in our whitelist.

Have you tried adding the games itself in SD Global Action List while AV is still enabled in SD?

My problem was mot with cracked games but with applications. 1 of them being a cheat/hack program from aa.net, wich now seems to work after the last update?...
The other is a wow-bot called honorbuddy. I understood from the programmers of these apps that they both use polymorphic code to protect the program from being reversed by the competition. They changed some stuff and now they seem to run just fine.
Problem is, that the AV seems to be blocking programs without detecting them.
Somehow they seemed to be blocked without telling us, so we can allow them.
Have you found a solution for the other programs listed in the forums. They seem to have the same problem and those are more "legit" programs...;)

Try the following and see if this helps:

Disabling Behavior Guard in MyAccount (http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=48180)-> then Smart Update-> Exit SD and Restart SD.

Disabling Full Screen Detection (Untick checkbox in Settings-> Enable Full Screen Detection)

And also enable kernel compat mode (settings-> Untick checkbox for Enable Kernel compatibility mode)

See how this goes.
