I have an HP Pavilion a1600n desktop computer that came with windows XP. About a yr ago I installed windows Vista on the comuter. about a week ago my son downloaded a virus. it would not let my anitvirus program run so i restarted in safe mode to run the anitvirus program. I stopped the scan before it was done and tried system restore to see if that would fix the problem so that i wouldn't have to wait hrs for antivirus to scan. system restore went thru its process then it restarted the computer as it normally does. but computer hung up on white screen. i manually shut down the computer and restarted. this time i got a black screen with a blinking cursor. computer would not boot up windows. I restarted manually a second time and got the same black screen with blinking cursor. I restarted a 3rd time and tapped f10 to enter Windows Recovery Console, resolved to restore back to factory settings. However, when the computer opened windows recovery, the only option it gave was 1. "C:\Windows. Which windows installation would you liketo log onto? To cancel, press enter".
When I type 1 and click enter, i am asked for administrator password. after i click enter for the password i get C:\Windows and a small white square that is not blinking. If I type "help" without quotes, I'm given a list of things such as Attrib, Batch, BOOTCFG, etc. I did nothing and tried to manually restart. COmputer continues to restart and open windows recovery console. I can't get anything else to open. will not even attempt to start windows. HELP!
I was not sure what those things were, so I contacted HP support via email and was told to order the system recovery CD's. I ordered them and tried to reboot computer with the 1st CD. Computer starts in windows recover console with the sole option listed above (1. C:\Windows).
I spent over 4 hours on the phone with HP support after getting the recovery disks and was told that i needed to send the computer in to be repaired but it would cost at least $200 to do so. I am not willing to spend that much money to have a 4 yr old computer repaired.
Is there anything that I can do to fix this problem?
Restating the problem: Computer is hung up on windows recovery console. Will not open anything else unless I manually restart and click f1 or f8 or escape. In f8 i'm given options, one to chose last best known working configuration. when I click that the only option i am given is "windows recovery console".
there has got to be a way to fix this!
thanks for your help.

Here is something that you can do in recovery console:

FIXMBR - ignore warnings
FIXBOOT
CHKDSK /r - this will take a long time, let it run even if it looks like it is stalled.

You may have to run it more than once.
