I'm under siege!

Hi guys! I'm so frustrated and at my wits end. :confused: I used to have a ridiculous amount of spyware on my computer and got rid of most of it with several anti-spyware programs. Now I'm left with the annoying symptom of my computer freezing up anywhere between 5-90 minutes of turning it on. I also occasionally get the loud beep of doom when it freezes. I've taken off the side and cleaned out the fans, but it doesn't appear to be a heat problem.

Every once in a while I get a message from PC-Cillin informing me that WORM_SOHANAD is attacking and when I try to use Mozilla I get a note about faulty scripts. I uninstalled Mozilla and have since run a thousan scans of my computer, always coming up with a couple cookies here, oh a trojan there, etc. And now the scans are saying that everything is dandy, except for the freezing up part.

also you may want to use some rootkit scanners.
i reccommend: sophos, blacklight or panda rootkit scanner.

some things to try:

Clean the junk files and registry.
1. Install, set and run CCleaner.
2. Set Options, Advanced, uncheck everything.
3. run Cleaner and Registry


1. Boot from the XP CD
2. Choose install Windows
3. Choose Repair existing Windows
4. Depending on the version of the CD, install SP2, SP3 and all other updates

AVG is one lousy PC protection.

Here is the hijackthis tutorial.

Delete all HJT entries that have file missing.

You have a lot of toolbars installed. If you are not using them, uninstall them.

It looks like you have AVG and Avast installed. You should only have one. In my opinion, if you are going the free protection route, uninstall both of them and Adaware and install SpywareDoctor with Antivirus free from Google and ThreatFire from PCTools. Far superior protection and scanning detection.

MBAM is a good standalone backup scanner.

Otherwise except for a lot of stuff, HJT looks OK.

There are some other things that you need to do.

Check for hidden device drivers

Boot your PC from the Windows CD.

Go to recovery console

Run FIXMBR - ignore any errors

Run FIXBOOT

Run CHKDSK /R - this may take a long time (an hour or more)

If you take my recommendation, run a full scan with Spyware Doctor.

See if that improves things.

I just noticed that you have Spyware Doctor installed. I would not be surprised if Adaware/Avast/AVG/Spyware Doctor is causing your lock ups.

You should only have one active antivirus, one active antispyware, one software firewall (routers are OK).
