View Full Version : Help to stop annoying 'NEW NETWORK DETECED' popup!!

Hey,
I have recently setup the firewall (pc tools firewall plus), but every time I log on to my laptop, this annoying little pop up comes up in the bottom right hand side of the screen.
It asks me to select which type of network I am connected to , 'Home', 'Work', or 'Public'. I am connected to the same network all every time, though sometimes wired and sometimes wireless.
It is really becoming annoying every time :@
Any ideas how to stop it?
I have tried the obvious and unchecked the 'Promtp on new network detection' box but the stupid thing keeps coming up. Argghh
Any help chaps greatly appreciated.

Same thing here, Windows 7, 32 bits, latest update.
Everytime I log on or restart, it keeps poping up the message of the new network detected, strange, it does that even if we uncheck the 'Prompt on new network detection' box.....

Does it on my system too. The pop up is not even completely displayed on the screen so its hard for me to get to the apply button. I'm running at resolution 1280 x 1024.
I believe it may be doing this if your ip address is dynamically assigned and you reboot or start up your system from scratch. I'm just guessing.
Maybe it should key off your default gateway instead of the PC's ip address?

if your using dhcp it is based off the mac address of your gateway

Hey Everyone:
I'll need some assistance from you all, if that's OK:
1. Have you given the network a unique name, or just accepted the default?
2. When the 'new network detected' popup occurs, please assign it a name and then go to Settings - Network, select the network and check the IP, Gateway & MAC address. Reboot your computer, allow the popup to occur again, and then compare values in Settings - Network with those noted down before. If you could post these details / results, that would be great.
Thanks!

Has this issue been solved?
I have the same problem, and on top of that, it shows me more than one messages, for networks with the same MAC # (the router MAC) and different IPs.

Oops, sorry I finally checked back on this post. I also get 2 pop up's. One is for the local gateway address and the other is an address somewhere back inside my net provider's net somewhere. Would it be a DNS maybe?
I did what was requested above. I get a different IP/net mask virtually every time I reboot my system. It is only in the low order parts of the addresses of course. The domain is still the same net. The MAC is the only thing that stays the same as it should since its in my cable modem.
I'm using Charter cable high speed internet. As a consequence of the pop up's my list of new networks in the firewall grows every time I reboot my system.

Hi Machiaveli,
I would recommend disabling the notifications of new networks to prevent this popup if you have been experiencing
Could you try the following?
1. Open PC Tools Firewall Plus
2. Select 'Settings'
3. Select 'Networks'
4. Confirm your current connection is set to the correct profile
5. Uncheck 'Prompt on new network detection'
This will prevent the popups from being displayed, and your connection should continue to use the profile you have set.
Cheers,
Matt

Could you please make sure that the issue exist with the latest version of PC Tools Firewall Plus 6.0.0.88. You might update previous version using Smart Update.
To help us with the research could you please do the following:
1) Shutdown PC Tools Firewall Plus
2) In the firewall application folder ( \Program Files\PC Tools Firewall Plus):
a) Rename the file FirewallSDK.dll to FirewallSDK.dll.org;
b) Copy the file FirewallSDK.dll ( the file contains additional log messages which should describe what is a cause ) from the attached zip file (FirewallSDK.zip) instead of the original renamed DLL;
c) Double click on FirewallAdapterGeneral.reg (from attached AdapterLogs.zip) to import registry key which turn on FW trace logging;
3) Launch PC Tools Firewall Plus an recreate issue;
4) Please pack and post on the forum there files from the firewall application folder: FirewallSDK.txt and network.ini. For security reason you might pack the files with some password and send me the password as a private message on this forum.
5) To revert system back please do the following: double click on FirewallGeneral.reg, shutdown PC Tools Firewall Plus, rename back FirewallSDK.dll.org to FirewallSDK.dll. Launch PC Tools Firewall Plus.
Thank you a lot for your help

mtanner: your solution did not work - the popups are still appearing even after unchecking that box (yes, very strange).
It wasn't like this before - the program remembered the networks and their names. Please fix this soon. This is obviously a widespread problem. I am currently using 6.0.0.88.
OS is Windows 7 RC 32 bit.

Hi ra[g]e,
That's an odd issue you've encountered, though there have admittedly been some teething issues with Windows 7.
Could you try alexey's fix above (posting the logs generated as a password protected archive) so we can further investigate this issue?
Thanks,
Matt

Same here, xp pro sp3, unchecking "prompt on new network detection" does not fix.
Edit: I have a netgear router and I'm using the "reserve address" feature.

I confirm .... Even on my laptop with Microsoft Windows 7 from version 6.0.0.88 of the firewall every time I reboot it asks me to select the type of network ......does not happen instead on another computer with Windows XP SP3

I to am having this problem and am perplexed as to what PCTools is finding.
1. My actual configured Network ID is displayed on all three connections
2. ipconfig /all printf shows only one connection ( correct IP to router )
3. PCTools second connection display shows the correct + 1 IP to router
4. PCTools also shows an IP I cannot track Down ( 121.90.190.194 ).
My system is running fine ( Windows 7 32 ~ fully up to date.)
I suspect that the last IP could be associated with some online program I've installed and tried out, such as VirtualBox or TeamViewer or XAMPP, though cannot confirm this.
So my problem is the same as above but whereas I would like to stop these popups', is PCTools actually trying to tell me something?
Does anyone recognize the third IP address?

We are now testing the fix which should solve the issue. It will be ready soon.
Regarding the third IP address: this IP address is registered to some ISP. I sent details as a Private Message. It looks like your PC uses this IP address some time ago.

please guys make it as a release of a smart update.
i too i am experiencing the same problem (network getting discovered again n again after reboot; its not getting saved)
and if some one could PM me whenever the update has been released or a fix I would really appreciate that :)
a tried this link (http://www.pctools.com/forum/showpost.php?p=225241&postcount=9):
But seriously speaking I am not a mood of experimenting with my system anymore..sorry but i usually have lost of work to do due to my university's work schedules.
Also I do have a simple "how to" question that I think it will be better to ask by creating a thread :D
thanks guys..

Just letting you know that I am having this same "network detected" issues at each startup, but on Vista 64 bit, so it's not just windows 7.
And this wasn't happening to me in all previous versions - it started happening a few program upgrades ago. Haven't had a chance to look at Alexis post, but I hope it can be fixed in a smart-update!

Am eagerly awaiting update also. Have three Win 7 computers, both 32x and 64x that see each computer on the router as a new network everytime I boot. They are not networked but just connect to the internet through the router.

Hi
I have same issue but I was away using a netbook when it started, but I expected it to happen then as I was connecting to remote hot spots.
Since I have returned home my main PC has "Remote Network Detected" every time I login but the second PC does not have the popup.
The netbook also asks now at home every time I login just like the main PC. I am running latest version 6.0.0.88. I am on XP SP3.
I didn't try the fix seeing someone has already tried.

So how is the next release coming along?
This bug is annoying me to death, and de-selecting the prompt check box for new networks seems to not work properly as I still receive the pop up with each login to W7.

I have never found out how to PM, without backing out of the subject and browsing through page after page, until I happen to accidentally land on where I can PM someone. And of course, by that point, I've forgotten their handle anyway. :)
It should be an option right when you go to reply and if it is on your end, it doesn't appear for me and neither is my settings page clearly linked. That's part of the reason I absolutely hate forums. Nothing is easy, yet every single company demands you use them, even though you may only ever ask them one question. I am registered at about 200 forums. I use maybe three or four of them and even those, rarely. So I have a user name and password file pages long, just in case I need them and I use three or four forums rarely. Yea, that makes sense! Gotta love forums! So much better than just emailing support, huh?! :)

yeh ..forums are easy to use generally and there to help the mass of people..emails are a pain and usually contain virus's, scams or spam lol...anyway cheers for the offer...
what a bout any admin or devs on this forum..do they have any info on the reasons for this irritating issues before i change to another firewall?...
