Can't shutdown my computer!

I have recently installed some drivers and restarted computer successfully but when i finished using my computer and pressed start button -> power button nothing happens and when i move my cursor over the start button or even anything related to that area i get the loading circle but nothing happens so i have to hold in the power button and my question is if i can keep holding in the power button as main shutdown or can my computer get damaged? if it can get damaged where can i locate the problem?

Using Windows Vista x64 if it helps.

Yes, your PC can get damaged, most likely by file corruption on a forced shut down. If you make sure that all programs are closed before hard shut down you will minimize the risk, but there is still the danger to windows files.

You say that you have loaded some drivers then the problem occurred. Can you do a system restore to a point before the drivers install and see if that fixes the problem?

If so, then you should load the drivers back one at a time to determine the culprit.

If not then something else is askew.

Run a hard disk error check. This should be done after hard shut downs as a general rule anyway.

Run antimalware scans.

You may have to resort to a Vista repair.
