Hello, im using win98, i.e 5.5

I am trying to find out what sites have been visited on my pc. The previous user has deleted tmp files, history, cookies and typing the 1st letter or word in the address bar finds nothing.

I had thought that if i searched the registry for www it would return all urls visited even though all else had been deleted. Sadly this has not worked, in fact it hardly returned any at all. Can anyone let me know why the registry did not keep a record & how to set it up to do so.

thanks for your help

the registry is not a logfile - what is kept in the registry is certain information to control IE.

If you open the InternetSettings either from the Tools menu of ie or from the ControlPanel, on the General tab you will find the Temp Internet section and the Settings button: that specifies the actual storage location.

If J am not much mistaken, the History is derived from the Temp file.

Other stuff, such as Cookies and Favourites are stored in the user profile directory tree. On a Win98 system without user login, thats directly in the system directory, with case of user login, in the Profiles\<user> subdirectory.

In the C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files folder is the index.dat file
If it is of considerable size (greater than 48kb) then it is alledged, that it contains all of the visited websites. Also, alledgedly, the program "Spider" can read it. I tried the program without success.
