Ping to su.pctools.com returns Localhost. The system is infected with Softbarrier virus. There was the following entry in the hosts file:
::1 localhost
which I have deleted, but still ping result is same.
The only remaining entry is:
127.0.0.1 localhost
The screenshot shows that the ping to google.com is working. I have killed the process g.exe which seems to be one of the virus processes.
The Smart Update does not work and hence I cannot run SD and remove the virus.
Please help.

The virus may have impacted your winsock.
Temporarily disable Spyware Doctor.
do Start, Run Cmd
at the command prompt type netsh winsock reset
press enter
exit
Re-enable SD and see if you can do a smart update.

Try updating SD manually following the below, then run a full scan.
Please complete the following steps to manually update Spyware Doctor.
You are required to be running the latest version of Spyware Doctor (v7.0.0.508) (http://www.pctools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61050).
1. Download the update tool from http://www.pctools.com/mirror/SDDB7.0.0.exe
2. When prompted please save the file to your Desktop
3. Once the download is complete, run SDDB7.0.0.exe
4. Follow the prompts to download the database
5. Once the download is complete, you should find a Databases folder on your desktop
Please Note* If you are transferring the database from one computer to another, you are required to transfer the Databases folder to the computer you wish to apply the updates on
6. Ensure that you have fully exited the application. To fully exit from Spyware Doctor please right click on the Spyware Doctor icon in the notification area (next to the clock on the Windows taskbar) and select Shutdown from the menu that appears.
7. Browse the Databases folder and run the DBTransfer file. This file will apply the updates to Spyware Doctor.
8. Launch Spyware Doctor again, you should now be up to date.
9. Perform a Full Scan.

Tried both above things in normal as well as safe mode - still no luck.
Please help.
> The Smart Update does not work
Do you mean that the _auto_ update does not work
or that the _manual_ update does not work?

What you'll need to do is run the Update tool from my previous post on another computer and transfer the database over to the infected computer (then perform a full scan). The infection appears to be blocking the updates for SD, because when you ping su.pctools.com it goes to 127.0.0.1.
