Automatic updates (I think they are microsoft updates of some sort) hang. The first step completes fine. Then it hangs in the second step.
I can't seem to get into safe mode in order to somehow disable the updates.
Any ideas would be appreciated since I have not been able to use this laptop all year.

Use Windows Explorer
navigate to \windows\software distribution\download
delete everything in the download folder, but not the folder itself
retry your updates.

I wasn't very clear in my first post.
I cannot even get the machine to boot up all the way. It hang on the updates. That is why I was trying to start it in safe mode and bypass the updates.

And thank you for your reply. If I can ever boot up, I'll do what you suggested.

My bad, I did not read it thoroughly, sorry. :o
Try booting from your Windows CD, user recovery console and then see if you navigate to the folder and delete the contents.
If you can not do that, remove your HD and see if you can take it to a tech shop to get it mounted as a slave on another PC and delete the folder.
If you are not in a rush, Newegg has a slick device for about $25 that lets you mount a Laptop HD, PATA (IDE) HD or SATA HD in your USB port and you can access it from there. Nice tool to have.
