I have for no reason just lost my ability to connect to the net over my cable modem. I use Win98 SE and the problem started 5 days ago. I have reloaded numerous times with no
improvement. Erasing the drive is NOT an option. I can ping or traceroute from Dos. I cannot get OutLook , Netscape, IE or antyhing that involves use of the Winsock , TCP stack.
I expected to find the problem sooner. Please email me with any suggestions.

Yes its marked to never dial. I am on a Lan to my Cable modem direct. I am very technical which is why this frustrates me. I have replaced files updated the OS. All kinds of strange stuff.

Uninstall the TCP/IP protocol and network client...reboot the computer ( make sure to reboot ) then re-install them and reboot again.

I have replaced the TCP IP stack, the Winsock and eliminated all traces of anything but Lan connection. Even after mod's to the registry , a complete change of ethernet card and a total re-install I am stiil aboe to ping and traceroute from Dos but, no other browsers, email etc ork. Other suggestions?

Are you suppose to use a proxy with your ISP??
If not are you configured for a proxy in IE???
ask your ISP if they have a proxy you can try
If you can ping then this is just a win SOCK problem.
Have you tried to just extract the wsock32.dll and winsock.dll file??
have you checked for extra copies of winsock.dll on the system??

Yes- No joy. I cannot "nuke" the hard drive. Everything works but the connection to my cable modem. All items have been tested and work on that modem. As I said I am technical so I tried teh Regedit stuff - still no joy.

you will have to reinstall the original nic card or else call the cable provider as they use the MAC address of the Nic to identify you as a customer on their network. No other sugesstions except "Have you called the tech dept of your cable provider about this problem?"

Make sure dial up networking is not installed on your computer. (Control Panel/ Add Remove Programs/ Windows Setup/ Communications)
Remove everything in your network stack except for any network adapters. (Control Panel/ Network/ Configuration)
Delete the following registry keys.
1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Winsock
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Winsock2
3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD\Winsock
4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\VxD\Winsock2
5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\RemoteAccess\Authentication\SMM_Files
Reinstall Dial up networking and it should rebuild those registry keys and add client for Microsoft Networks and TCP/ IP to your network stack.
