View Full Version : Copy Disk command still missing

I am running Windows ME, and was trying to make a copy of a floppy disk using the Copy Disk command in the File menu of My Computer. This command has disappeared for some reason. I originally posted this problem on 05/05/01, and was told to replace the diskcopy.dll file. I have since done this, but it did not restore the Copy Disk command. Does anyone know of anything else that I could do to attempt to restore this command?

HAve you tried to right click the drive and copy disk that way?

Hi,

I had the same problem in WIN98SE. In the run dialog box, try typing the following:

Rundll32.exe diskcopy.dll,DiskCopyRunDll

If the Copy Disk window appears, then check your registry against the registry of a machine that has the "CopyDisk..." context menu appearing normally when you right-click the floppy disk drive. See my post in the registry discussion forum. I'm no expert, but fortunately an expert in that forum helped me ;-)

KistlerHandyman,

I don't think this has changes from Win98 to ME. Here's how it appears in the registry in Win98SE:

===========BEGIN CUT=============
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\Drive\shellex\ ContextMenuHandlers\{59099400-57FF-11CE-BD94-0020AF85B590}]
@=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{5909940 0-57FF-11CE-BD94-0020AF85B590}]
@="Disk Copy Extension"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{5909940 0-57FF-11CE-BD94-0020AF85B590}\InProcServer32]
@="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\\diskcopy.dll"
"ThreadingModel"="Apartment"
=========END CUT===========

I had the same problem in one of our classrooms. I ended up setting up an icon on the desktop for the instructors so the students could have an easy way to copy their diskettes.

Just right-click on the desktop, choose New, Shortcut, in the command line box type "Rundll32.exe diskcopy.dll,DiskCopyRunDll". Then name it whatever you like. I named mine "Copy Floppy Disk". When you double-click the icon, you can now copy your diskette.

Hope this workaround works for you.

scififreak,

I don't know if you realize this, but you are responding to a 6 month old thread. The people involved have either long since solved their problem or given up.

Any input is welcome at WinGuides, but it's much better if it's more up-to-date. Please keep answering questions, but try to do so with threads less than one month old.

Just don't overpay her, may go to her head.

We all, each of us, have a uniqueness, some of us enjoy it, some of us don't.
