View Full Version : Temperature and cooling fans
Where would I find info on the temperature that's being monitored in my CPU(Gateway Tower, Win98SE) My husband says he has seen in Windows setup where it shows the temperature and was wondering if that info can be found elsewhere in windows? Also, we were considering trying to put a small cooling fan inside the CPU, cause there's alot of heat that comes out of the top of the unit where the CD ROM and the CD/RW is located and the fan that came with it is located at the bottom of the tower in the back and the intake is at the bottom too. Wondering if anyone has heard of adding another fan?

"...Where would I find info on the temperature that's being monitored ..."
if your computer came along with a description of the hardware (motherboard layout, connectors etc), then in there. Otherwise probably at Gateway internet site.
Additional cooling fan:
if your machine doesn't stand in direct sunlight but in a regular heated / cooled office, there is no need for extra cooling. The really heat sensitive part is the CPU chip itself. The chip carries a metal block designed to transport the heat away and into the surrounding air, where the fanned air will get rid of it. Check once or twice a year to see if the fan input area isn't closed up with dust, else clean that area.

Yes, can be bought at many computer outlets. But J would only add one, if you fill up your machine with many extra devices (harddisks). The cooling provided with the original fan should be sufficient for standard configurations. And sometimes the fan is also heat controlled, you may hear how it changes revolution spead.

and some more info:
Depending on your hardware and extra software that may have been installed by Gateway (consult your hardware description), the temperature within the machine may get monitored by software.
In this case you would see a message when temperature reaches a warning level, so you could shut down in a controlled manner, and probably you would experience a fast machine shutdown by the monitoring software, to prevent overheating damage to your system.
Please note my initial "...it depends..." and ask your vendor if you need exact information.
just want to add a remark:
Just in case you would think of needing to add a fan self: you must know how to do the wiring of the electric circuitry within the machine, else have it installed my your vendor.
