Winme CDrom

I have a problem where randomly WinMe seems to access the CDRom while Explorer is open as if it's trying to see if a CD is inserted. Most times there isn't one and it holds up my system while it's checking. The computer freezes until it finds no CD. When I turn off Auto Insert Notification this problem goes away. I would prefer to have Auto Insert on though. Anyone heard of this or know how to get Explorer to stop checking the CDroms until one is actually inserted??
