I downloaded the new Firewall Plus. When I went to install the screen came up and said SD was installed and had to first be removed. So I did. I installed PCTFW and then went to reinstall SD and a screen came up and said PCTFW must be uninstalled to install SD.??????????????????????????????

Hi Silvertones,

When installing the latest version of the PCTFW v6.0.0.69, you will need to install the latest version of SD v6.1.0.447 which was released yesterday as the new version of the FW incorporates new drivers, which will not allow you to install any previous versions of SD (I will add this info to the sticky). Please make sure you re-download SD from www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/download for the latest version.

Last night (Aug 31) there was a Smart Update Product Update which required a reboot. Does this count as "the latest version of SD v6.1.0.447"?

If you had SD v6.1.0.447 installed previously, then a SU will download the latest drivers-> which also requires a reboot as mentioned.

Thank you for your quick response.

Technically, it shouldn't matter if I was previously running 447 or not (I was). If I was someone with a system having been unused for few months and running 445, a Smart Update last night should have brought me up to the "latest" 447. If not, then Smart Update isn't all that smart...

Be that as it may, I don't know if there's a language barrier or reading/writing comprehension issue on either side of this conversation, but my question remains unanswered. As of right now I don't know if I have the "latest version" of SD 6.1.0.447.

6.1.0.447 came out in several weeks (few months?) ago. Relative to yesterday's "product update," shouldn't that tick up to 6.1.0.448? Or to 6.1.0.447.1 (as if the world needs another value added to dot delineated product versions)?

It's beyond me how PC Tools handles versions and I'm certain I'm not alone in pointing out this illogical and senseless schema. In the 20 years I've had in the industry and the endless mind numbing array of apps I've supported across a half a dozen platforms, it's been PC Tools only that's put me in the unique position of wondering "Which version of this version am I running?" And don't get me started on your Web people's absurd habit of posting up "New Version" for current versions released months ago with merely some other trial app tossed into the installer.

Could you please provide the "latest" version number for an exe or a dll I can check to determine my 447 environment?

Thank you.

Thanks for you're feedback.

In my opinion, I think a number change is also a good idea, unless there is a very minor change within the version release, then I think its not needed. We had to update a minor part of SD, due to the release of PCTFW v6.0.0.69 (Driver incompatibility) which will not affect the functionality of SD. The beta version of SD has already included the new drivers to accomodate for PCTFW 6.0.0.69 and previous beta's. However, because we released PCTFW v6.0.0.69 yesterday, therefore if users who wish to install this version will not be able to install the firewall if they have any older versions of SD. Hence, the update with the file was made available via SD's Smart Update. If you have SD v6.1.0.447 and Smart Update says you are up to date, then you have the latest version. We tend to make the upgrades available for older versions in due time and you may see this One Click Upgrade notification. The latest version can be found on www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor page - Release Date: September 1, 2009.
