This is becoming a real problem. Every once in awhile. Maybe 1-2 weeks I'll get a popup that says that Smart Update failed. If I try to run it manually I'll get the Can't unpack files error and it persists. The only way to fix is to uninstall and then reinstall. This is a real pain. Anyone else seen this?

The real message to be exact:
" Error while unpacking program, code 2, Please report to author"

What firewall and other anti-malware programs are you running?

Firewall +
Threatfire
Avast Home

Try temporarily disabling Avast next time and see if that is the source of the conflict.

I've disabled everything and still have this problem. This never happened with 441 it's since 445 & 447. Between this and the issue with the adware.adsponsor wre SD attacks the temp files in Avast I'm getting discouraged with the product. I've just turned it off.

I restarted SD and I tried to get the updates manually and it looked like it was going to do it. Didn't get the message but then I get a flag that the update failed and to try later. I restarted the computer and let it run and thought I'd try again and I noticed that the autoupdate had worked. I tried the manual update again and got the error unpacking............

Silvertones, do you have Behavior Guard enabled with your SD subscription? Could you please send me your license code via PM so I can temporarily disable this. We want to see if this helps.

Also, what is your OS and service pack?

XP Home SP3 and all updates

Could you try temporarily uninstalling ThreatFire and see if the problem occurs? If this does not work, could you try uninstall AVAST after.
We need to figure out what could be conflicting with SD that causes this error.

I have installed a similar setup and could not recreate the problem. When you say Firewall, are you referring to Windows Firewall? or PCTFW? or another Firewall?

I use PCTFW+
This is going to be difficult to troubleshoot. At this point I've done a clean reinstall of SD and it works fine. Both Auto & manual update. As I mentioned before it'll take a week or two for this to happen. I think it's sort of an issue like playing the slot machines. When something in all of my security programs lines up just right SD will have this issue.
I also got this error message when trying to run the uninstaller. Completly shutting down the program and rebooting then allowed the uninstaller to run. In the past if SD was running and I tried to uninstall I would just get a message that SD needs to be shut & I would say yes and it would uninstall.

I also use RM. Could it be doing something? Admittedly when I run it, RM, I repair everything it finds without question.

I doubt that it is RM as I use it regularly too.

With an intermittent problem, it is importatnt to try to remember what events took place just prior to the problem reappearing.

While it is a long shot, check your event logs, both application and system and look for errors.

You might want to perform a hard disk error check, just to eliminate that as a potential cause.
